I’m Constable Drew Wilder with the Ontario Provincial Police.  Traveling safe this winter is a concern of Grey and Bruce County Roads departments along with the Ministry of Transportation.  That team of experts, along with the OPP want to make sure when you’re out this winter, you’re driving smart by slowing down, buckling up and staying on the defensive.

Your vehicle tires are the only thing between you and the roadway so make sure your tires are in good condition.  Worn or damaged tires can seriously affect the performance of your vehicle.  Check your air pressure on a regular basis as tire pressure decreases during colder temperatures.  Remember that “all-season” tires may be adequate in some areas but they may not have the traction you want if you’re travelling through the snow belt region.

No matter how good your tires are, keeping a safe distance from the vehicle ahead of you allows proper stopping distances to avoid collisions.  It’s always going to take longer to stop if the road is covered with snow or ice.

Drive with your vision looking far ahead of your vehicle’s location so you can recognize potential hazards and have plenty of time to respond.  Sudden braking or turning of the wheel can sometimes put you in a more troubled situation than what you were trying to avoid.

Stay alert, slow down and stay in control.  The three key elements to safe winter driving.

From the Wilder Side of Winter, remember; expect the unexpected so nothing will be a surprise.  It’s all about being prepared.
